However, in a recent event in the United States, Shakib addressed the topic with refreshing clarity. “From U-19 level, I’ve played with Tamim and Mushfiq bhai. We’ve played cricket for 20–25 years together, spent a lot of time. From that point of view, I’d say they are very good friends,” said Shakib.
He added that the idea of having a ‘best friend’ has evolved for him over time. “It’s hard to name someone your best friend. Your best friend should be outside cricket. In cricket, I have many good friends, but outside, very few I can truly trust. At this age, I’ve realized there’s no such thing as a best friend. The one you can trust is your best friend,” he reflected.
Despite their reported falling out, Shakib’s family visited Tamim when he was hospitalized with a heart issue several months ago. Though Shakib was abroad at the time, he conveyed his wishes through his parents—an act Tamim later acknowledged with appreciation.
Tamim last played for Bangladesh in September 2023 and has since announced his international retirement. With Shakib nearing the twilight of his own career, a reunion on the field appears highly unlikely.
When asked about his closest friends from cricket, Shakib named former pacer Rubel Hossain. “I’ve had a great time with Rubel. Outside cricket, me, Rubel, Taskin—we’ve had lots of fun together. I’d say Rubel, and also Taskin.”
