The International Cricket Council (ICC) has dismissed the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) request to remove Andy Pycroft as match referee from the ongoing Asia Cup.

According to Cricbuzz, the ICC formally conveyed its decision to the PCB on Monday night, clarifying that Pycroft had no role in the much-discussed handshake controversy during the India-Pakistan clash in Dubai on Sunday.

The PCB had alleged that Pycroft advised Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha not to shake hands with Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav at the toss, questioning the neutrality of the 69-year-old Zimbabwean official.

However, the ICC clarified that Pycroft was only relaying instructions passed on by Asian Cricket Council (ACC) officials present at the ground, effectively refuting Pakistan’s claims.

This latest development has now placed fresh spotlight on Pakistan’s upcoming fixture against the UAE on Wednesday, for which Pycroft has been designated as the match referee. The PCB has publicly stated it would not take the field if he remains in charge.

While the PCB president Mohsin Naqvi, who also heads the ACC, may attempt to push for a change, official appointments of match referees and umpires traditionally fall under the ICC’s purview.

Despite Cricbuzz’s report, the PCB has denied receiving any official communication from the ICC regarding the matter.
