India captain Mithali Raj became the highest run-getter in women's cricket across formats, overtaking former England skipper Charlotte Edwards on Saturday. Mithali achieved the feat during the third and final ODI against hosts England while chasing 220 for a win.
Mithali has now surpassed Edwards' 10,273 runs to become the world's most prolific batter in women's internationals. Mithali scored an unbeaten half-century, 75 not out, to give the Indian women's team its first victory on their current tour of England.
The Indian skipper struck a delightful boundary in the 24th over to become the leading run-scorer in women's cricket.
"I never gave up in the middle. It's being in the middle, because you can't win the match sitting out in the dugout. I wanted to win the game for the team," Mithali said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
The 38-year-old is already the most-capped ODI player in the history of women's cricket. She is also the first Indian woman to complete 10,000 runs across all formats.
Both teams will now face off in a three-match Twenty20 International series.
